More details

The Long Trail is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the US, completed in 1930. It runs 272 miles from the Massachusetts border to the Canadian border along the crest of the Green Mountains. The first 100 miles coincide with the Appalachian Trail before the LT heads north and the AT turns east into New Hampshire. Mount Mansfield (4,393 ft) is the highest point in Vermont and one of the most spectacular sections. The Green Mountain Club (greenmountainclub.org) maintains the trail and operates a network of lean-tos and lodges. Mud season closures are enforced on fragile sections.
