More details

Over 25 miles of hiking trails and 2.4 miles of elevated boardwalk through 21,000 acres of federally designated wilderness protecting the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the Southeast. Trees reach champion-level heights — some of the tallest in the eastern US. Backcountry camping is FREE with a permit: email the park at least 72 hours in advance or pick up a permit at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center (9am–5pm, state ID required). Potable water and restrooms available at the visitor center. Most trails start from the visitor center. Some trails flood seasonally — check conditions before visiting. About 20 miles southeast of Columbia, SC. One of the most underrated National Parks in the country.
