More details

The Appalachian Trail runs 2,198 miles from Springer Mountain, GA to Mount Katahdin, ME through 14 states along the Appalachian mountain range. It is the world's most hiked long trail — roughly 3,000 people attempt a full thru-hike each year, about 25% complete it. White paint blazes mark the route throughout. Northbound thru-hikers start February–April to arrive at Katahdin before fall closures. About 260 three-sided shelters with tent sites and water are spaced along the route. Katahdin requires advance reservation and closes seasonally — timing is critical for NOBO finishers.
