4-mile round trip hike to Williams Lake at 11,040 ft in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness, Carson National Forest. The trail climbs 1,000 ft through aspen and spruce to a stunning alpine lake beneath Wheeler Peak (13,161 ft — highest peak in New Mexico). Continue another 0.3 miles above the lake for a waterfall and views of the upper cirque. One of the highest-rated hikes in New Mexico — 4.8 stars across all major trail apps. Trailhead at the end of NM-150 past Taos Ski Valley, free parking. Dogs allowed on leash. Best July–September; trail can hold snow into late June.
