One of the most spectacular sections of the Appalachian Trail. From Carvers Gap (5,512 ft) on the TN/NC border, hike open grassy balds to Round Bald (5,826 ft), Jane Bald (5,807 ft), and Grassy Ridge Bald (6,189 ft) — nearly 1,000 acres of rolling open mountaintop. The views are extraordinary in every direction: it has the rolling green meadow feel of the Scottish Highlands. 5 miles round trip. June bloom brings the largest natural Catawba rhododendron garden in the world. Free parking at Carvers Gap on TN-143 / NC-261. Managed by Cherokee and Pisgah National Forests. One of the AT's most iconic and accessible day hikes.
