Roanoke Triple Crown

Three legendary Appalachian Trail day hikes above Roanoke, Virginia. The AT corridor through this section is some of the finest ridge walking on the East Coast — and these three peaks are the reason people drive from three states away.

All three peaks are off VA-311 near Roanoke. Dragon's Tooth and McAfee Knob have dedicated USFS trailheads. Tinker Cliffs is best reached via the Catawba Valley approach or combined with McAfee Knob for a long day.

Best Season

March through November. Fall color peaks mid-October. Spring wildflowers on the lower slopes in April–May.

No Permits Required

All three trailheads are National Forest. Free parking. No reservations. Dragon's Tooth has a voluntary day-use fee jar.

Dogs Welcome

Leash required. The final scramble to Dragon's Tooth may require lifting smaller dogs over a few rock moves.
