Good to Know
Dogs don't regulate heat as well as humans. Carry more water than you think you need — about a quart per dog per hour in hot weather. A collapsible silicone bowl weighs almost nothing.
Some trails require leashes. Some National Park trails don't allow dogs at all. The Trek4Free search page has a dogs-allowed filter — use it before you go.
Hot pavement, rocky scrambles, and long distances on hard surfaces add up. Check paws after long hikes. Musher's Secret or similar wax helps with both heat and rough terrain.
